LinguiScience recently won a contract to translate a 100 page catalogue of laboratory equipment. The source document was created in InDesign CS2 and this gave us the opportunity to try out the Trados TagEditor application for the processing of InDesign files. In the following scenario you will see how this remarkable tool will save you the additional cost of having the graphic designer recreate the initial catalogue in a second language.
Imagine that you need a catalogue as part of your market effort. You have invested a considerable amount of time and money in the research, drafting and layout, and you are looking forward to reaping the benefits this marketing tool will have. However, that catalogue reaches only part of your market. To reach the whole market you need to translate it into a second language. Looming ahead are the costs associated not only to the translation and but also to the graphical design work to ensure that the translated version looks as great as the original version. But if you use a translation company, such as Linguiscience, that owns a Trados licence, then things start to look up.
TagEditor processes various types of file formats, among which are the Adobe Exchange (.inx extension) documents. These files are generated from InDesign CS2 or CS3. The text is translated in this format and then imported back into InDesign CS2 or CS3 without losing all formatting, styles, and fonts. The layout is by and large kept intact throughout the process. Some minor desktop publishing adjustments may be required at the end but the time savings generated are considerable.
Normally, the text from an InDesign document would need to be cut and pasted into a Word document for the translator. Once translated, the text is returned to the graphic designer who goes through the arduous process of importing and manipulating the text into the final design. This would be followed by intensive proofreading to ensure that nothing was lost in the process. Using the .inx file format, the process is automated, eliminating the last two steps, and resulting in cost savings in the range of 40%!
